Uttarakhand Governor Inaugurates J.K. Lifecare Centres' New API and Intermediates Manufacturing Facility in Ujjain, India

The Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.), on Saturday inaugurated a new Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) and Intermediates Manufacturing Facility belonging to J.K. Lifecare Centres in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

The ceremony took place on September 19, 2026, and was accompanied by remarks from the Governor stressing the strategic importance of domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing to India's health security and its ambitions for self-reliance.

A Step Toward Pharmaceutical Self-Reliance

Speaking at the inauguration, the Governor described self-reliance in the pharmaceutical sector as a critical pillar of India's health security and reliable medicine supply. He said that realising the vision of a developed India required not only strengthening the healthcare system but also continuously enhancing the country's domestic manufacturing capacity for essential medicines and their key components.

The Governor pointed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stated goal of building a developed India by 2047, noting that a self-reliant pharmaceutical ecosystem would play an important role in achieving that national objective. He said that a strong domestic manufacturing base would enhance India's health security while also reinforcing the country's position in global pharmaceutical supply chains. The new facility in Ujjain, he said, represents an important step toward developing research-driven manufacturing capabilities and ensuring the availability of essential pharmaceutical inputs.

Human Capital at the Heart of Industrial Success

A significant portion of the Governor's address was devoted to the role of people in driving pharmaceutical advancement. He stated that the true strength of any pharmaceutical unit lies not merely in its machinery and production capacity, but in its scientists, engineers, technicians and skilled human resources.

He said that continuous training, skill development and a scientific approach are among the key foundations for the long-term success of the pharmaceutical sector. The Governor also highlighted the employment potential created by facilities of this nature, saying the Ujjain plant would create new opportunities for employment and skill development for young people. He described such industries as a strong bridge between knowledge and employment for youth trained in pharmacy, chemistry, biosciences, engineering and other technical disciplines.

Balancing Industrial Growth With Environmental Responsibility

The Governor took care to address the environmental dimensions of industrial expansion alongside his remarks on economic opportunity. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a balance between production and environmental sustainability, calling the judicious use of resources and adoption of safe processes essential requirements of modern industry. He further noted that the success of industries becomes more meaningful when its benefits reach local communities, create opportunities for local youth and generate new possibilities for ancillary industries. His comments framed the facility not merely as a production unit but as a contributor to broader regional development.

Closing his address, the Governor offered congratulations to the full range of people and institutions involved in bringing the facility to completion. He extended his recognition to the scientists, engineers, technicians, employees, project partners and all institutions associated with the project. He said that behind the success of every major project lies the hard work, dedication and collective contribution of numerous individuals and organisations.

The inauguration was reported by the Information Wing of Lok Bhavan, the official Uttarakhand government establishment in Dehradun, marking the occasion as one of official state significance despite the facility being located in Madhya Pradesh.
